The threat of high billing at the dntists in the UK is always there in more than half of the residents, mainly due to the fact that they lack access to dental insurance or the NHS.

But having dental insurance is not enough to cut all the costs. A few dental treatments charge 50% of the cost even to those with the insurance.

One other limitation with the dental insurance plans is that many companies impose a limit on the covers per year, like around £1500 each year, and some high cost dental procedures like dental implants are not covered by the Insurance companies.

Here are some thoughts in people’s minds, and how they can save money on dental treatments.

1. Can I ask for more negotiation on the dentist bills?

Negotiations are always to be counted, no matter how small or big they are. If you are already on an dental insurance plan, you can’t expect more negotiation on the price as the dentist is already taking off around 15-20% of the cost of the treatment.

If you are not on any dentL insurance plan, you can try wiggling around with the price before the treatment starts, as the dentist too is aware of losing something in the business if you knock the adjacent door, taking the cost into consideration.

According to a UK based company which evaluates the dental insurance plans coverage, most of the dentists in the UK reduce the cost of treatment by around 10% when the patient agrees to pay the entire cost upfront. The patients have the right to ask for a discount that the insured patients are given, and since the recession drop, the patient count has never rose as most of them had lost the insurance coverage they were with.

2. Are there any affordable dental treatment options for uninsured people?

There are a few options through which the uninsured dental patients can get some reduction on the cost of dental treatment, one of which includes the dental plans provided by the dentists themselves without involving any government services etc. and here they charge monthly or quarterly premiums to the patients. The dentists also sometimes connect the patients to third party payment systems, which take care of the discounts and payment issues.

Some insurance companies and dentists, just to keep the patients flow towards them, offer some discount cards for free or with a very low premium.

3. Do dental students providing care for less in dental schools?

The treatments like root canal therapy, dental extractions, teeth cleaning etc. are done by the students who are being trained at the dental schools, all under the supervision of the qualified dentists, but the charge for the dental treatments become less and nearly half in schools like The Indiana University School of Dentistry, as these treatments are done by students in a slower rate.

The qualified dentists in their private clinics do the same treatment by consuming lesser time, and so the cost of treatment is high.

Still, the breaks in prices are dependent on the type of dental treatment. For example, the cut down of cost for orthodontic treatments is not as high as that done for the regular treatment options.

Dental tourism plays a very important role when it comes to saving money on major treatment procedures, like the orthodontic or surgical stuff. The overseas dental care costs a fraction of the cost in UK, but the patient needs to keep in mind about the travel costs, the time being spent for traveling and they need to tackle any other issues during the travel.

According to UK and Western European dentists, anyone who is considering traveling abroad should first search for any recommendations, and if possible, they need to search for dentists who are qualified from the UK so that they comply with the terms that apply in the UK and overseas too.
